In 2004, 34 men, women and children stepped out of a Southeast Asian rainforest and presented themselves as refugees from violence engulfing their native Cambodia. They did not know that the war they were fleeing had in fact ended—25 years earlier. Corinne Purtill was one of the first journalists to meet the families upon their incredible return to society. Years later she returned to Cambodia to learn the truth about their time on the run. What she found was a darker and more complicated tale than the one they first shared, a story of terror, isolation, fierce loyalty, appalling choices and murder. The result is a story that examines the unyielding human need for family and connection and the meaning of survival.

Corinne Purtill is a journalist who has reported around the world for publications including Quartz, GlobalPost, CNN, Salon and the Cambodia Daily. She lives in California with her family.

Ghosts in the Forest Single eBook Corinne Purtill

This is a story of Cambodian men who were impressed into the Khmer Rouge army during the Vietnam era. They took their families deep into the jungle to hide from the war. They stayed there for decades unaware that the war had ended. This story is told by a journalist who spent time with the family after they emerged from the jungle. The author talks about the Khmer Rouge, the treatment of soldiers impressed into their army, and why young families felt the need to run for safety. The author also tells the story of life after emerging from decades of isolation to find their country transformed. It is an interesting read and informative book.

Ghosts in the Forest Single eBook Corinne Purtill Reviews

Very impressive for a $2.99 special offer- the first I have tried based on a screen pop-up on my device. well worth it imformative, well composed and moving non-fiction of one of the reverberations caused by Pol Pot, the demented visionary who perfected Cambodia by eleiminating imperfections. ( Since nobody is perfect, he eliminated copious numbers of the population. For one example, literacy was sufficient grounds for execution, except for literate Marxists from the Sorbonne.) Here the life of Moun, a tribal highlander from near the Laotian border, and his small family group of survivers, emerge from the rainforest after 15 years of hiding, uncertain whether the Khmer Rouge are still in power, waiting to kill them. Their tale of extreme adversity is not so fine as a Joseph Conrad novel, but it is well worth the time to learn about the folly of utopians and the imperative of survival and the indomitable elasticity of the human spirit against all manner of strife, pain, and horror.
The writing flows as if conversational and the characters are oddly both simple and complex. Another novel perspective on Cambodia.
Such a great story and cleverly written. Highly recommended!
I thank the author for her immense labor in bringing us, so eloquently, the riveting story of Moun. One of the best narRatives I have read
Another interesting book that takes you into the area's so little known by the majority of us., In trying to escape the war within their country, this small group went deep into the jungle to live, it was interesting to see how they used the things that were available to create clothes and other necessary items to keep them alive and live with so very little.
A well written book that lacks unnecessary pages. Reading, I could tell that others that have written stories about this individual portrayed him as a Savage and Foreigner. This book connects on the deepest level that the main character was willing to allow. This is an excellent representation of Cambodian Highlander life and the tortures brought to them by the Khmer Rouge. Definitely worth a read.
Corinne is a gifted writer who tackles this incredible story with curiosity and grace. Tension mounts as she uncovers the secrets of the lost families of Cambodia. Pacing is excellent, and it's a tight piece of nonfiction. I highly recommend.
